After the mega-success of HBO's 'True Blood,' based on the Sookie Stackhouse novels by author Charlaine Harris, it's no surprise that another network would try to duplicate that formula for ratings victory.
Variety reports that CBS is developing a new show, called 'Grave Sight,' based on Harris' Harper Connelly mystery series. For added pedigree, Ridley Scott and Tony Scott are aboard as executive producers, along with 'CSI' and 'Law & Order: SVU' alums.
The books follow a woman, Harper Connelly, who is able to hear and see the last moments of the dead after being struck by lightning as a teenager.
But is Harris' magic alone enough to make the new series a hit? The Scotts are behind 'The Good Wife,' which, in its second season, continues to be one of the most engrossing dramas on television. But one of the reasons 'True Blood' is so influential is because of Alan Ball's vision. Without a strong visionary calling the shots, 'Grave Sight' could turn out to be another generic, paranormal-tinged drama.
Then again, 'Ghost Whisperer' performed well for the network, running for five seasons before its cancellation in May, and it's not like that show was groundbreaking. If CBS is looking for a light, supernatural, female-fronted series to fill that gap in its schedule, 'Grave Sight' could be a safe bet.
